New Zealand Pasture-fed Cow MilkMilk powder is dried fresh milk solids obtained through an accelerated water evaporating process in a dairy factory. It is usually made by a process called spray drying. Pasteurised milk is first concentrated in an evaporator to approximately 50% milk solids. The concentrated milk is then sprayed into a heated chamber where the water almost instantly evaporates. Modern driers are very efficient.

Fresh milk will last only 1 – 2 weeks even if stored under 4ºC while canned milk powder will last 50 – 100 times longer than fresh milk without refrigeration.

Milk powder packed in metal tins and filled with nitrogen gas can keep milk powder fresher even longer. As a result of about 90% reduction on weight and volume, the cost of storage and transportation of milk powder is far lower than fresh milk.

Non Perishable and Convenient.

As a food source, milk powder is non-perishable and provides high energy in a compact and ready to eat form. Instanised milk powder dissolves in cold and warm water in seconds and it is an ideal emergency stock item. Wastage and spillage associated with liquid milk can also be eliminated as milk can be reconstituted on demand in small quantities rather than buying bulk to save money and not being able to consume at one time.

Powdered milk is a convenient way to carry your favourite milk around all day.

As a functional food ingredient, milk powder is widely used in baking, chocolate making and cooking for enhancing flavors and as a thickener. It can comfortably substitute any evaporated or condensed milk with the exact amount needed at any time. Being able to change thickness and sweetness as you wish; powdered milk is certainly a far better alternative than using traditional evaporated and condensed milk.

Milk powder is not only a great source of food, but also is an excellent source of high quality nutritional components. NuZtri® Full Cream Milk Powder contains (by weight) about 25% protein, 38% lactose, 29% milk fat, 0.95% calcium on average. NuZtri® Skim Milk Powder contains (by weight) about 33% protein, 54% lactose, 1.2% calcium on average. In addition, milk powder has high concentration of some soluble vitamins and minerals.

Vitamins A+D Enriched vs Standard Milk

Vitamins A and D deficiency is a worldwide problem in both developed and developing nations.

Vitamin A plays a key role in maintaining healthy vision, skin, immune system and antioxidant activity. Vitamin A deficiency is estimated to affect approximately one third of children under the age of five around the world. There is no data available for New Zealand.

The human body can generate Vitamin D if the skin can obtain sufficient UV from sunlight. People today however tend to sit longer indoors in front of their TV and computer screens. We are afraid of too much exposure to sunlight which is definitely a risk for skin cancer and sunscreens can block up to 98% UV rays. As a result, insufficient Vitamin D has been linked to many diseases such as rickets (a soft bone disease among children); bone weakness and the increased risk of fracture in adults and elderly; multiple sclerosis; diabetes; cancer and heart disease. In some western countries such as the USA and Canada, milk must be fortified with Vitamin D to prevent Vitamin D deficiency.

Proven.

A 2008/2009 survey of adults in New Zealand found a total 32% of the population classified as either Vitamin D deficient or having a below recommended Vitamin D level in their blood.

In Australia a study of 11,000 people found approximately 31% of the population had Vitamin D deficiencies. Deficiency for women was 39% compared with 22% for men.

Importance of Vitamin D.

The Ministry of Health advises that you can get more Vitamin D by sensible sun exposure or choosing foods that contain vitamin D. The Ministry of Health also emphasis that exposing your skin to the sun increases your risks of skin cancer. It is important therefore that you balance the risks.

Drinking Vitamin D enriched milk instead of standard milk is an easy and safe way to ensure children, adults, pregnant women and the elderly have sufficient Vitamin D. The same applies to drinking milk enriched with Vitamins A.
